Magnetic lashes are the new kids on the block in the beauty/makeup sector. It’s #1 on Google’s most searched terms in the Beauty sector in 2018. They’re not your typical false eyelashes; they’re much more high tech and cool, but is it just another flash in the pan, flyby gimmick or is it here to stay?

We’re once again looking at where public attention is focused on, using Google’s Trend list. This is Google’s 2018 list for Beauty Trends.

  1. How to apply magnetic lashes
  2. What is a lash lift
  3. How to remove individual eyelashes
  4. What hair color looks best on me
  5. How to do the cat eye

The first thing that’s immediately evident is that eyelashes are a huge trend, making up 3 of the top 5 list. The eyes, in particular, seem to be a point that we zero in on, and it’s unsurprising that a lot of effort is poured into enhancing how our eyes appear. At DermLetter, we covered how the eyes play an essential role in impressions of youthfulness and attraction in general, and many makeup techniques are designed to enhance a person’s appearance through the use of an illusion effect. It seems that Google trends mirror this focus on enhancing and accentuating the eyes.

Why Magnetic Lashes?

Magnetic lashes take the number one spot for 2018 Beauty related searches on Google. Eyelashes have the effect of accentuating a central feature of the face, the eyes. Most beauty techniques are designed to either make or create the illusion of longer and fuller lashes. Examples include eyelash extensions, false eyelashes, growth serums, and mascaras.

False eyelashes are a simple and inexpensive solution if you have short eyelashes and have been used for decades. Unfortunately, they also have some drawbacks:

  • They can fall off quite easily if they aren’t applied correctly.
  • Tugging from the removal of false lashes can cause damage to your natural lashes.
  • There’s work (and frustration) involved in using glue and tweezers.

Magnetic false lashes are placed above and below the natural eyelashes and adhere to each other with magnets, like a sandwich, eliminating the need for glue. These products are reusable, so they won’t keep draining your wallet despite being more costly than the traditional falsies. As adhesives aren’t used, another advantage is that they will be less messy to remove and less likely to damage your natural eyelashes in the process.

Price Tag, Styles, Preference

Marketers may tell you that beauty is priceless™, but the reality for most of us is that price is a factor in most of our purchasing decisions. Magnetic eyelashes are relatively new, with the first ones popping up in 2014. Today, there are many variations in styles, as well as price points.

Ardell Magnetic Eyelashes:

  • $11.89 US
  • Human hair
  • There may be a learning curve if you haven’t used magnetic lashes.

One-Two Cosmetics Eyelashes:

  • $69.00 US
  • The original magnetic lash maker
  • Lightweight

Both are reusable magnetic eyelash products at different price points. Both have mixed reviews both on Amazon as well as YouTube reviews. Another critical factor is that while magnetic eyelashes are trending, many people have not used them yet, and they require a different technique and feel to make them look their best.

Overall

Removing the need for adhesives is an important innovation both from the perspective of skincare and simple convenience. There does seem to be a higher learning curve for people who are new to magnetic lashes, and it may not feel as secure as the traditional glue-on lashes at first. However, at the current price points, it’s likely worth a try to see if it works for you.
