Salicylic Acid (BHA)
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and the single most effective OTC ingredient for treating blackheads, clogged pores, and mild to moderate acne. Unlike AHAs that only exfoliate the skin surface, salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it can dissolve into sebum and penetrate inside pores to dissolve the dead cell and oil plugs that cause comedones and breakouts. It also has inherent anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the redness and swelling of active acne. At 0.5 to 2 percent concentration, it is available in cleansers, toners, serums, and spot treatments. Salicylic acid is FDA-recognized as an active acne treatment ingredient. Every product below containing salicylic acid has been scored for the conditions BHA is most relevant to.
How Salicylic Acid Works
Salicylic acid works through keratolytic action -- it dissolves the intercellular cement between corneocytes, promoting exfoliation of dead cells. Because it is lipophilic (fat-soluble), it can penetrate the oily environment inside pores, dissolving the mixture of sebum and dead cells that form comedonal plugs. It also reduces sebum secretion, shrinks sebaceous gland size, and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This combined action -- pore clearing plus anti-inflammation -- makes it particularly effective for acne. The optimal pH for salicylic acid efficacy is 3 to 4.

How to Use Salicylic Acid
In a leave-on product (serum, toner), apply after cleansing to dry skin. Start with every other day and increase to daily as tolerated. In a cleanser, massage for 60 seconds to allow contact time before rinsing. Leave-on products are more effective than wash-off because the extended contact time allows deeper penetration.
- Leave-on products work better than cleansers for pore clearing
- Start every other day, increase to daily as tolerated
- Apply to dry skin for better penetration
- Do not combine with other exfoliants in the same routine
- BHA does not increase sun sensitivity like AHAs, but daily SPF is still recommended
