Lactic Acid (AHA)
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with a unique advantage: it exfoliates dead skin cells while simultaneously providing humectant hydration. Its larger molecular size compared to glycolic acid means it penetrates more slowly and less deeply, resulting in gentler exfoliation with less irritation risk. This makes lactic acid the preferred AHA for sensitive skin, dry skin, and beginners to chemical exfoliation. At 5 to 10 percent, it effectively smooths texture, brightens dullness, and fades mild hyperpigmentation. At higher concentrations (30 to 50 percent in professional peels), it provides more dramatic resurfacing. Lactic acid is naturally found in the skin as part of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF), which contributes to its excellent biocompatibility.
How Lactic Acid Works
Lactic acid dissolves the desmosome bonds between dead corneocytes in the stratum corneum, promoting their shedding and revealing fresher cells underneath. Unlike glycolic acid, lactic acid also increases ceramide synthesis in the skin, directly supporting barrier function while exfoliating. Its humectant properties attract water to the skin surface. The optimal pH for exfoliant activity is 3.5 to 4.0.
