Caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant compound used in skincare primarily for its vasoconstrictive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In eye products, it temporarily constricts blood vessels to reduce puffiness and dark circles. In body products, it promotes lipolysis and improves microcirculation, which is why it appears in many cellulite treatments. As an antioxidant, caffeine provides UV-protective benefits that complement sunscreen. It penetrates skin readily due to its small molecular size. Caffeine is most commonly found in eye creams, under-eye serums, body firming products, and antioxidant formulations. Results are typically temporary (lasting several hours) for vasoconstrictive effects but cumulative for antioxidant protection.
How Caffeine Works
Caffeine constricts blood vessels through inhibition of phosphodiesterase, reducing blood flow to the skin surface and decreasing puffiness and the visibility of blood vessels beneath thin skin. It has documented antioxidant activity, neutralizing free radicals from UV exposure. In adipose tissue, it stimulates lipolysis through cAMP accumulation. Its small molecular weight (194 Da) allows excellent skin penetration.
