How to Choose Eye Care Products
Matching Ingredients to Concerns
For fine lines and wrinkles: retinol (at lower concentration than face products, 0.1 to 0.3 percent), peptides (especially Matrixyl and argireline), vitamin C. For dark circles: caffeine (reduces puffiness and temporarily constricts blood vessels), niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin K. For puffiness: caffeine, green tea, cooling application. For dryness and crepiness: hyaluronic acid, ceramides, squalane, peptides. For all-around maintenance: a good peptide eye cream covers most concerns.
Application Technique
Use your ring finger (lightest pressure) to apply eye cream in gentle patting motions along the orbital bone -- never drag or rub. Apply to the under-eye area, outer corners, and the brow bone. Avoid getting product too close to the lash line to prevent migration into the eye and irritation. Apply morning and night, after serums and before moisturizer. A rice grain-sized amount per eye is sufficient.
When Eye Cream Is Worth It
A dedicated eye product is most valuable when: your facial moisturizer irritates the eye area, you want targeted treatment for dark circles or puffiness, your facial retinoid is too strong for the eye area, or you experience milia (tiny white bumps) from heavier facial products migrating to the eye area. If your regular moisturizer works fine around your eyes and you have no specific eye-area concerns, a separate product is not essential.
