How to Choose the Right Exfoliant
AHA vs BHA vs PHA
AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic acid) are water-soluble and work on the skin surface -- best for dullness, texture, fine lines, and dry skin. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and penetrates into pores -- best for acne, blackheads, oiliness, and congestion. PHAs (gluconolactone, lactobionic acid) have the largest molecular size so they exfoliate the surface very gently with humectant benefits -- best for sensitive, rosacea-prone, and eczema-prone skin that cannot tolerate AHAs or BHAs.
Concentration and pH
Exfoliant effectiveness depends on both concentration and pH. Lower pH means the acid is more active: glycolic acid at pH 3 is significantly more potent than glycolic acid at pH 4.5. Effective ranges: glycolic acid 5 to 10 percent daily or 20 to 30 percent weekly, lactic acid 5 to 10 percent, salicylic acid 0.5 to 2 percent, mandelic acid 5 to 10 percent. Higher concentrations and lower pH increase both results and irritation risk. Start low and increase as tolerated.
Frequency and Overexfoliation
Start with 2 exfoliation sessions per week and increase to a maximum of 4 to 5 for most skin types. Signs of over-exfoliation: shiny but rough skin, increased redness, stinging with normal products, tightness, and increased breakouts. If you see these signs, stop all exfoliation for 2 weeks and focus on barrier repair. If using a retinoid, you may need less chemical exfoliation. Never combine AHA and BHA in the same application unless in a professionally formulated product designed for this.
