How to Choose Acne Treatments
Types of Acne Treatments
Benzoyl peroxide (2.5 to 10 percent) kills acne bacteria on contact and is the most effective OTC antibacterial treatment. Salicylic acid (0.5 to 2 percent) dissolves pore-clogging sebum and dead cells. Sulfur reduces inflammation and absorbs excess oil with less drying than BP. Hydrocolloid patches draw out fluid from whiteheads overnight without squeezing. Azelaic acid (10 to 20 percent) treats acne and PIH simultaneously. Adapalene (0.1 percent, available OTC as Differin) is a retinoid that prevents future breakouts through normalized cell turnover.
Matching Treatment to Acne Type
For blackheads and whiteheads (comedonal acne): salicylic acid or retinoid. For red inflamed pimples (inflammatory acne): benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid. For deep painful cysts: short-contact benzoyl peroxide, but severe cystic acne usually requires prescription treatment. For hormonal acne along the jawline: consistent retinoid use plus niacinamide.
